According to reports from both men, Presidents Biden and Putin achieved a great deal during their summit in Geneva, Switzerland. The two leaders discussed working together in dealing with Iran, and they addressed the withdrawal of the U.S. troops from Afghanistan. On the issue of Ukraine, President Biden said he expressed his administration’s “unwavering commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
President Biden said he raised specific human rights concerns that his administration has, including the treatment of Russian opposition leader Alexi Navalny. President Putin refused to guarantee the dissident’s safety in prison. President Biden also rejected President Putin’s between Capitol rioters and Alexi Navalny.
President Biden outlined how his administration would respond if there were a Russian cyberattack on critical U.S. infrastructure. “I pointed out, if they violate basic norms, we will respond,” he stated.
Overall, the U.S. president said he felt the summit was positive. And he is confident that the Russian president won’t risk alienating the United States. “I think the last thing he wants now is a cold war,” President Biden said.
